Ultimate Hiking Essentials Every Woman Needs to Know

Today’s post is sure to tackle everything you need to know about hiking as a woman. You’ll go from beginner to veteran quickly by the end of the post in terms of knowledge, and all you’ll need to do is simply apply what we’ll be sharing with you to enjoy the thrills of hiking.


One quick note though…


Our tips are a general guideline for short, single-day hikes. We won’t be covering backpacking or extended multi-day hikes because that merits a different strategy that a beginner should avoid.

Ladies, if you are new to hiking, please keep these approaches in mind:

1. Don’t Go Alone

Go to this experience with someone that has practice and experience,  because they can be your guide, can tell you if you are missing something, will show you how to be safe and help you have more fun without worry. 

2. Take It Easy

Pick a hike that is less than 5 miles so you won’t overexert yourself. Additionally, know when your body is ready for a break (know your limits), and take a break when needed. You’ll also want to check the weather of the area you are visiting so you won’t get caught off guard by the environment. 

3. Use A Packing List

A packing list will help you pack the items you need. We always use them to make sure we have enough snacks, water, and useful supplies depending on the environment. For example, it could have rained the day before, so we know to bring trekking poles to adjust to the mud or slippery slopes.

4. Practice

If you have new equipment or products, practice how to set it up and use them at home before you leave for the hike so it will become second nature to you when you’re in the trenches.

5. Prepare

Be ready to be outdoors with the proper clothing, remember to stay hydrated, and take a few moments to know the trail you will be going to so you can prepare the necessary equipment.

Tips To Know So You Can Be Ready

In this section, you will see more helpful tips, ideas, and tools you can bring along to help you get to a more advanced level.

For example, one useful tip to remember is that some lakes and rivers are more delicate than others. Several hikers prefer to stay away from harming the lakes, as animals drink from it. We would recommend reading the regulations of the area you will be visiting for you to know information about nature's surroundings.

Know the Leave No Trace (LNT) Rule

  • This is to be clean to be respectful to nature and wildlife.
  • Always check online the rules or regulations for the area you will be visiting. 
  • Plan and prepare.
  • Stay on marked trails.
  • Dispose of everything properly, not leaving trash behind. 
  • Start fires under the use established fire rings, fire pans and keep fires small. 
  • Put out campfires completely.
  • Control pets at all times.
  • Respect other visitors and protect the quality of their experience.
  • Be courteous to other users on the trail, always stay on the right side of the path. 
  • Observe wildlife from a distance. Do not follow or approach them.
  • Never feed animals.

Getting Ready 

Plan for the proper hike by knowing if your body is ready for the outdoors. There are a few exercises that you can do such as walking, jogging, running, or doing small hikes more often. Know the essentials and safety gear you can bring like water, snacks, poles, short pocket knives, and insect repellant. There are also plenty of videos of women who experience the hiking world often. Another idea we suggest is to learn about the area, learn what types of plants and animals you can encounter and if they are dangerous or not. 

Self Care

Bring chapstick, sunglasses, wear unscented deodorant and bring sanitizer. A simple rule to follow is to clean your hands before eating. To stay fresh bring, a hat or a headband, braid your hair or put it up on a ponytail.you can bring wet wipes to keep your face fresh. 


Always treats your feet, if you feel pain, treat blisters and hot spots. Treat your feet again at the end of the day and make sure you give your feet room to breathe. 

Packing List: 

We briefly mentioned earlier about creating a packing list, so let’s cover what items you should highly consider adding to your list to have a more fun hike while covering all of your bases.

Backpacks:

There are plenty of backpacks out in the market, but not all of them are the right size for every woman. A lot of backpacks are large and not the right type for all women. Get a backpack that is suitable for your body type and will not hurt your shoulders while walking for long hours. There are backpacks for multi-day packing, overnight packing, and even a travel backpack for petite women, curvy women, and women with a small torso. 

Food:

Bring enough food in case of an emergency. Non-cook items are the best, with nutrients that will keep your energy up (granola bars, nuts, trail mix, energy bars, beef jerky, dried fruit, dried meats, protein bars, bagels, peanut butter, crackers, tuna, apples, oranges, avocado! Oh yes! 


**bring enough water** A good substitution for water bottles is a water bag backpack, it’s easy to use and they can carry up to 2L of water, plus extra water bags. 

First aid

First aid kit including foot care and bug repellent, including hand sanitizer, medicine. (for pain and allergies)

Shelter: 

A tent can protect you in case of any weather changes. A sleeping bag is another item you can bring with you if you will be spending the night on the hike. (Find what parks allow night camping). 

Clothing: 

Bring an extra change with you in case of an emergency. Here are some items that you can bring and wear. Hiking boots, hiking shoes, t-shirts OR long sleeve shirts made for the outdoors, hiking pants or shorts, hiking sandals, hats, and socks that are comfortable for long walks.

What To Bring For Cold Weather?

When hiking in cold weather make sure to bring gloves, jackets with insulation, hand/toe warmers, layers (base and puffy). Snow on the trail? Bring Microspikes, snowshoes, hiking poles, emergency bivvy in case it is needed. 

Gear & Tools For Ease And Comfort

Navigation

You will need any of these: a map as it pinpoints terrain options on the area you are visiting. A compass gives you directions. A GPS device helps to guide you more effectively.

Illumination

Bring headlamp, flashlights or chest trap lights, plus extra batteries

Sun protection

Can bring sunglasses and sunscreen. If you don’t like wearing sunscreen wear long sleeve shirts. 

Repair

You could bring multi-use Knife, duct tape, and a gear repair kit.

Fire

Bring matches, lighter or firestarters.

Protection

Whistle, water purifier, emergency beacon, emergency bivvy, hiking/trekking poles, knee braces (for support), harness, chalk bag (if you are climbing), and a carabiner. (if you are climbing)
